A decade after the blockbuster release of
Baahubali, the long-standing controversy surrounding
Sridevi's exit from the film has been reignited. In a recent and fiery interview, producer
Boney Kapoor has finally set the record straight, directly blaming the
Baahubali producers for the rift between his late wife and director
SS Rajamouli. Boney stated that Sridevi’s refusal to play the role of Sivagami was not due to extravagant demands, but rather, a salary dispute and a massive miscommunication.
The Untold Story: ‘She Is Not a Struggling Actor…’
For years, it was widely reported that Sridevi was the first choice for the iconic role of Sivagami, which was later immortalized by
Ramya Krishnan. However, when
Sridevi opted out, rumors quickly spread that her high demands for a hefty fee, a complete hotel floor, and a large entourage were to blame.
Now,
Boney Kapoor has countered these claims in a candid interview on the YouTube channel
Game Changers. He revealed that the producers, not Sridevi, were the culprits. "She wasn't a struggling actor," Boney stated, "you're getting mileage out of her... Why would I want my wife to do that?" He alleged that the producers offered Sridevi less money than she was paid for her comeback film,
English Vinglish, and then lied to Rajamouli about her demands to justify the low offer.
The Misunderstanding: How a Public Rift Began
Boney Kapoor’s account sheds light on the origins of the public feud. He claims that after a successful initial meeting with Rajamouli at their home, the producers of Baahubali, including Shobu Yarlagadda, made the lowball offer behind the director's back. He further alleges that the producers then fed Rajamouli false information, fabricating stories about Sridevi's alleged demands for a hotel floor and numerous flight tickets. The only request, according to Boney, was to schedule long filming stints during the children's holidays.
This misinformation led to Rajamouli publicly commenting on Sridevi’s supposed unprofessionalism, which deeply hurt the veteran actress. Sridevi later responded in an interview, stating that such behavior was not in her nature and that her career of over 50 years would not have been possible with such demands. Rajamouli himself later expressed "regret" for his public statements, admitting his mistake in discussing the matter on a public platform.
The Lasting Impact
While the film went on to become a global phenomenon, the controversy left a lasting mark. Boney Kapoor’s recent statements serve as a poignant defense of Sridevi’s professional legacy, highlighting a behind-the-scenes conflict that has remained a talking point for a decade. The revelation places the blame squarely on the producers, offering a definitive account of why one of Indian cinema’s most beloved actresses missed out on one of its biggest blockbusters.
