Salman Khan's highly anticipated film,
Sikandar, was one of the year's most significant releases, but it ultimately failed to meet box office expectations. Now, director
A.R. Murugadoss has candidly opened up about the film's poor performance and taken full responsibility for its lackluster reception.
The Director's Confession: "I Couldn't Execute It Well"
In a recent interview,
Murugadoss, known for his blockbuster films like
Ghajini and
Holiday, admitted that while the core story of
Sikandar was deeply emotional, he was unable to translate his vision effectively onto the big screen. The film, which reportedly had a budget of ₹200 crore, only managed to collect around ₹184.6 crore worldwide, making it one of
Salman Khan's most disappointing projects in recent years.
Murugadoss explained that the film's premise, about a king who only appreciates his wife after her death and seeks to fulfill her unfulfilled wishes by helping the organ recipients, was emotional at its core. However, he stated, "The story was emotional, but I couldn't execute it well." This acknowledgment has garnered respect from many in the industry for his honesty.
Comparing Sikandar to the Blockbuster Ghajini
The director drew a compelling comparison between the failure of Sikandar and the massive success of his Hindi directorial debut, Ghajini (2008), starring Aamir Khan. He revealed that he had a "complete command" over Ghajini because it was a remake of his own Tamil film of the same name. Having already gone through the process once, he was confident in its execution.
In contrast, Sikandar was an original Hindi script for him, and he found the creative process more challenging. He admitted that working outside of his comfort zone and native language made it difficult to fully convey the nuances and emotions of the story.
A Return to Hindi Cinema?
Despite the setback, A.R. Murugadoss hasn't closed the door on Bollywood. He expressed his desire to return to Hindi cinema, but only if he finds a project where he feels he has his "comfort zone" and can truly connect with the audience. The director's introspection sheds light on the immense pressure and creative challenges that filmmakers face when bringing a vision to life, especially in a different language and cultural context.
