In the 1990s, veteran director Mahesh Bhatt was renowned for his gritty movies. Despite his successful run of serious films, which included Sadak, Sir, and others, he chose to make a comedy-masala picture for his daughter, Alia Bhatt, called Duplicate.

Mahesh Bhatt explained why he changed genres in a media conference on the Duplicate set. He revealed, “It’s a film that I am looking forward to showing my children,” implying that his previous movies might have been too graphic or violent for young audiences.

The filmmaker clarified that he wanted to make an impression on Alia, who was only four years old at the time. “Children normally don’t get impressed by their parents. The chances are that I might just impress my four-year-old girl, Alia, with Duplicate,” he told.

Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla, and Sonali Bendre played the main characters in the 1998 movie Duplicate, while Gulshan Grover, Mohnish Bahl, Farida Jalal, Sharat Saxena, and Tiku Talsania played supporting parts. Karan Johar and his father, Yash Johar, co-produced it. The comic action-thriller also included Farah Khan, who had started her career as a choreographer.

The story, which centers on the issue of mistaken identities, depicts a cook who is falsely accused of being a gangster. In the Mahesh Bhatt film, Shah Rukh also portrayed an enemy.

A few years later, Alia appeared as a kid artist in one of Mahesh Bhatt's films. She portrayed the younger version of Preity Zinta's character in the 1999 movie Sangharsh. In 2012, she made her major Bollywood debut in Student of the Year, directed by Karan Johar.

Alia Bhatt is the daughter of Soni Razdan and legendary filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt. Shaheen Bhatt is her older sister as well.
